TABOO OF SEXUAL HEALING

MEET THE WOMAN WHO NEVER GAVE UP

BY CARSTEN GRAFF

Katya Martinova's Journey from Extreme Trauma to Recovery

In an attempt to understand the deeper questions surrounding trauma, sexuality and recovery, Carsten Graff travelled to Russia to meet Katya Martinova and visit the places where her nightmare had unfolded. Visiting the small town and the garage beneath which the underground dungeon had been hidden, he gained insight not only into Katya's extraordinary journey, but also into the culture and social environment that had shaped the events. During his research, Graff also maintained illegal communication with Viktor Mokhov, who contacted him from prison through a smuggled cell phone. The conversations offered a disturbing glimpse into the mind of one of Russia's most notorious rapists and added a unique perspective to a story that is ultimately less about evil than about the mystery of human resilience and the possibility of healing after unimaginable suffering.

Sexual trauma is one of society's deepest taboos. Many survivors struggle not only with the memories of abuse, but also with shame, intimacy, trust and the challenge of reclaiming their sexuality. Katya Martinova's remarkable story explores the possibility of healing after extreme trauma and raises difficult questions about resilience, sexuality and post-traumatic stress.

At the age of fourteen, Katya Martinova and her friend Lena were abducted by Viktor Mokhov and held captive for almost four years in a small underground dungeon. During their imprisonment, they endured repeated rape, violence, starvation, and psychological terror. Under unimaginable circumstances, Lena gave birth to two children while Katya acted as her midwife.

After their dramatic release in 2004, Katya became known around the world as one of the survivors of one of the most shocking rape cases in modern history. Yet this book is not primarily about the crimes themselves. It is about the long and painful process of psychological recovery, sexual healing and rebuilding a sense of identity after trauma.

More than a true crime story, this book explores the taboo surrounding sexuality, trauma recovery and the human capacity to heal after experiences that seem impossible to survive.
